Chapter 6
He was right there beside her, allright.
Sabrina didn't even try to ignore him at breakfast, nor did she try to put some distance between them in the classroom that had been set up in one of the hotel meeting rooms. It would have been pointless, she told herself ruefully. There was no way to get rid of the man. All she could do was learn to tolerate his presence and make damn certain she didn't get herself into the precarious, highly charged situation in which she had found herself the previous evening. She was on her guard now, Sabrina decided vengefully as he sank down beside her in the seminar room. She had not spent all this time building her protective walls only to have them ripped asunder by the lure of a man like Jake Devlin.
The sixty or so people attending the seminar soon filed in and filled the room. A lecture podium had been placed at the front, together with the usual audiovisual paraphernalia, and there was an air of expectation among the medieval devotees.
Across the room Perry Dryden caught Sabrina's eye and smiled hopefully. She returned the look with more than her usual amount of friendly warmth. Perry appeared so nice this morning. There was nothing overwhelming or dangerous or arrogant about him. She smiled again and could have sworn he blushed.
"Don't," Jake murmured beside her, breaking in on her speculation about the cause of the faint red stain on Perry's features.
"Don't what?"
"Don't encourage Dryden. You'll only be getting both of you into more trouble than either of you can handle."
"As long as we're listing dos and don'ts, I'll give you one to keep in mind," Sabrina shot back just as Larissa Waverly swept dramatically into the room to take her place at the podium. "Don't threaten me!"
There was no opportunity for Jake to respond to that because Dr. Waverly proved herself an expert at taking hold of an audience. It wasn't just that she was a very striking woman or that she made the most of her physical assets that morning by wearing a sheer, low-cut sundress, but the fact that she knew and loved her subject.
That crucial message dominated the morning seminar, and Sabrina, along with everyone else in the room, was soon caught up in the intricacies of the Age of Chivalry.
"What lends real magic to this era is not the tales of heroic battles and knight-errantry," Larissa Waverly pointed out during her talk. "Keep in mind that such legends of valor and strength have come down to us from countless other ages and a variety of nations. By themselves the heroic quests of the Knights of the Round Table would be no different from other such tales of their kind. No, what makes this knightly culture of the Middle Ages unique is the way the literature and the songs of the age introduced the concept of courtly love.
"This new element of romance was largely a product of the troubadours of southern France,
